At the invitation of the UICSB Arts & Lecture Series, NAMI President George Kaufmann facilitated an invitation only discussion of critical issues facing young people experiencing mental health difficulties and their families with author and leading national expert on suicide and mood disorders, Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison. Dr. Redfield Jamison is Professor of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins and author of “Unquiet Mind” an autobiographical account of her personal battle with bipolar disorder and suicidal ideation, who was in town to speak at the UCSB Arts & Lecture Series. Local participants included leaders from provider organizations as well as mental health professionals from both public and private mental health systems. Topics discussed included the alarming increase in teen suicides and barriers to care experienced by these young individuals and their families. The discussion resulted in all the participants learning something about what’s being done here and elsewhere about these critical issues.
