Former NIMH Director Appointed California Mental Health “Czar”

On May 21 Governor Newsom announced the appointment of Dr. Tom Insel as top mental health advisor and state mental health “czar”.  Dr Insel, a psychiatrist and neuroscientist, is immediate past director if NIMH (2002-2015), joining Verily [Googles health science] in 2015, then co-founding Mindstrong, a mental health software start-up in 2017.  “He will help us reorganize, soup to nuts, the entire delivery system……. working with Mark Ghaly [former LA County Health Director] from a county-by-county perspective to integrate mental health and substance abuse services”, the governor said.  Dr. Insel will serve without compensation while continuing in his position as President of Mindstrong.  All of us at NAMI in Santa Barbara look forward to having Dr. Insel join our struggle for better mental health services as he has been a long-time friend and supporter of NAMI and a frequent speaker at our national conventions during his tenure at NIMH.
